UPS inhibition enhances anti-oxidant defenses during ischemia–reperfusion. Isolated rat hearts were perfused under high glucose conditions (33 mM) vs. controls (11 mM) for 60 min and subjected to global ischemia as earlier described ± addition of 5 μM lactacystin or 10 μM MG-132 during the first 20 min of reperfusion. Western blot analysis for: a SOD1 and b SOD2 with lactacystin treatment; c SOD1 and d SOD2 with MG-132 administration. We employed β-actin as loading control. Values are expressed as mean ± SEM (n ≥ 4). *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001 vs. respective controls.
