Diabetes increased Smad activity. Smad7, an inhibitory Smad, increases as TGF-β/Smad activity increases. Diabetes increased Smad activity compared to control animals. Treatment with curcumin reduced diabetes enhanced TGF-β/Smad activity. Whole hearts were used for analysis. Smad7 mRNA levels expressed as fold change relative to housekeeping gene RPL32.
