UPS inhibition attenuates infarct size. Isolated rat hearts were perfused under high glucose conditions (33 mM) vs. controls (11 mM) for 60 min and thereafter subjected to regional ischemia as earlier described. UPS inhibitors (5 μM lactacystin or 10 μM MG-132) were administered for the first 20 min of the 2-h reperfusion period. a Infarct size/area at risk (%) following lactacystin administration and b infarct size/area at risk (%) following MG-132 treatment under baseline vs. high glucose perfusion conditions.
