Left ventricular hypertrophy is accentuated in the spontaneously diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat after MI. In (A) the normal distribution curves are shown of cardiomyocyte cross sectional areas (μm2) calculated from an average of 400 cardiomyocytes in each group (N = 6 per group). The mean values, presented as μm2 of cardiomyocyte cross sectional areas, calculated from the total number of myocytes are presented in (B). Panel (C) shows the heart weight/body weight ratios (g/kg) and panel (D) shows the ANP mRNA expression as determined by qRT-PCR form the LV:s of GK and Wistar rats (N = 6). Data is presented as means ± SEM; * indicates P < 0.05 vs. W (sham-operated Wistar), # indicates P < 0.05 vs. GK (sham-operated GK), indicates P < 0.05 vs. W+MI.
